Verdict is a dramatic play by Agatha Christie, first staged in 1958. Unlike many of Christie’s best-known works, it is not a traditional whodunnit but a psychological drama about love, duty, idealism, and moral responsibility.
The story centres on Professor Karl Hendryk, a brilliant academic who has fled political persecution in his homeland and settled in London with his wife, Anya. Anya is seriously ill with a progressive disease and is cared for by her devoted cousin, Lisa Koletzky, who lives with the couple. Beneath the calm surface of the household, emotional tensions build as Lisa’s quiet affection for Karl becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
The fragile balance is disrupted by Helen Rollander, a wealthy and headstrong student who insists on taking private lessons from Karl. Helen becomes infatuated with him, and her obsession leads to tragic consequences. As desire, resentment, and misplaced idealism collide, the play moves toward a devastating act that forces the characters to confront questions of guilt, sacrifice, and justice.
Rather than relying on suspense over the identity of a murderer, Verdict explores the moral aftermath of destructive love and the danger of ideals pursued without compassion. It is one of Christie’s more serious stage works, focusing less on detection and more on the emotional and ethical consequences of human choices.
